November 23: Veterans at the Soldiers Home take advantage of the new medium of radio and keep the Home’s designated program selector busy. G. H. Gehlert is in charge of selecting which programs to tune in to for the 1,000 bed ridden veterans at the Home, in addition to the hundreds of others. The veterans use individual ear phones to connect to the radio system and often fall asleep with the phones in their ears. A spate of “ear corns” has developed among veterans, which includes calloused skin in the ear.
