May 10: President William McKinley and other officials head to the Soldiers’ Home ten minutes after 2 pm in a special trolley that is decorated with flags, ferns and flowers. The trolley travels along the Sixteenth Street route and on the way President McKinley smokes a cigar and chats with his companions. Upon arrival, the President is showered with rose petals and a carriage decorated in yellow mustard (and drawn by four gray horses) escorts him to the home. All veterans salute the President on the way to the dining hall for the formal ceremony. |
